How to Write a Blog in 3 Steps

Want to learn how to write a successful blog? Read on to find out.

One of the most successful ways to deliver valuable information and raise customer engagement is through blogging. You are probably already aware of how crucial blogging is during the process of marketing and advertising to a certain audience. Learning how to effectively write and maintain a blog is a key skill to have if you want to grow your company. However, there are certain things you need to know to make it a successful blog.

Before you write a blog, ask yourself these two questions: “How can I make my blog post engaging?” and “How can I get my audience to come back for more?” To start, a blog should be both informative and entertaining. We want our readers to be educated and also to stay interested in the topic that is being discussed. This post will teach you how to effectively write a blog post in just three easy steps.

Plan your blog post

Choose a topic

A blog should be focusing on a topic that you are interested in. You should never have to feel like you are forcing yourself to write something that doesn’t intrigue you. If you’re writing something, and this goes for anything else such as essays and stories, that you don’t feel passionate about then it will show. Your readers can tell the difference between an enthusiastic post versus one that is not. You might think that this is something everyone knows, but trust me when I say that I’ve read hundreds of blogs that bored me to death.

Do some research

You might think that all bloggers are professional writers and let me just say that is not always the case. Many bloggers have to do at least a little bit of research before they start writing a blog. In some cases, you might not even know anything about a certain topic that you want to write about. Let’s say you want to write a blog about post-workout meals and what you should eat after a good workout. If you’re not a nutritionist, then you should definitely do some research before writing a blog about what healthy meals and snacks you should eat after hitting the gym. You’ve probably also learned this in school, but always check your sources and their credibility. The last thing you want is to be spreading misinformation.

Write a draft

Start with a good headline

Some writers start off their blog post with a title while others wait until they’re done writing the post to create the headline. A good headline can be many things. Your approach to writing them depends on the topic you are writing about and also who you are writing to. “How to” and list headlines are always good to use. For example, “How to French Braid Your Hair” or “Top 10 Long-Lasting Foundations” are headlines that easily grab the reader’s attention.

Content

Start by creating an outline for your blog. It’s just like writing an essay except you have the option to be a little informal. Essentially, just like essays, you should have an introduction, body paragraphs (in this case, it is your content), and a conclusion. Your outline should have a visual hierarchy something similar to this:

  • Heading:

    • Subheading

      • Subheading 2

Having a hierarchy in your blogs is an important feature considering that is how you organize your writing. If you just have a blob of text, people might just doze off. Another thing you should remember is to include images in your blog post. Make sure that you use free photographs or ones that you have permission to use. Some of my favorite sites that have free images are Unsplash, Pixabay, FreeImages, and Pexels. Your images should not only be visually appealing but also related to your topic.

Make edits

Although you might think you are a great writer, you never know when you might have to make a few changes here and there. Make sure to use bold and italics to emphasize and words, but of course, use it sparingly. Don’t confuse your audience with complicated language. You want to make sure that your target audience can understand and relate to you. Remove any unnecessary words or sentences and only include what is necessary to convey your message. One of my favorite editing tools is Grammarly. Don’t be afraid to use it. Once I started using this free writing app, I never stopped.
