We all know how frustrating it can be dealing with overseas shipping, itchy fabrics, or ill-fitting clothes when shopping online, especially when those pieces are for a special occasion. In order to fix this issue that many South Asian women and men face, especially during wedding season, Mayuri Baheti created MOR to allow her customers an easy way to buy amazing items online. In this exclusive interview, Mayuri gives us insights on her inspiration, manufacturing process, and future goals for MOR.
Meet the CEO of MOR: Mayuri Baheti
Even at a young age, Mayuri knew that she wanted to start her own business. Her family served as one of her biggest sources of inspiration, with her father currently running his own company. Because of these influences, she decided to pursue her future career by working at a technology consulting company. After four years, she decided to go to business school to explore the world of start-ups and entrepreneurship.
One of her biggest learnings from graduate school was "Whatever business you start, make sure it's solving a real problem. Don't start a business just to start it." After she graduated college, she worked at a startup for about a year. During this time, she and her friends were starting to settle down and get married. That’s where she found one issue she knew she could solve.
The Beginnings of MOR:
After attending many South Asian weddings, she found two major issues that most women were facing. One complaint stemmed from the outdated shopping experience for South Asian clothing. There were many companies that had no return policies, which created problems when items didn’t fit properly, material was itchy or uncomfortable, or when pieces didn’t arrive in time due to long shipping delays. When shopping for such a special event, like a South Asian wedding, these factors negatively impacted the experience for many guests. Shopping is supposed to be a fun, exciting activity; instead, for many of these women, it had become a frustrating, stressful experience.
The second most common issue was how expensive these outfits were for these guests. For outfits that are typically only worn once or twice, spending thousands of dollars on clothes seemed like a waste for many women.
That’s where the idea of MOR was first created. In order to solve these problems, Mayuri wanted to create a brand that focuses on a “mix-and-match” component. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on an entire ensemble, customers could pick and choose a new piece to add to their wardrobe that can be worn for any event. Let’s say you have a skirt that you’ve already worn. Instead of buying an entire new outfit for another wedding, customers could buy a single blouse to match that skirt. Instead of one or two event outfits, clients can add a few pieces from the MOR collection to create dozens of outfits at an affordable price. MOR also promises 5-8 day shipping, carry sizes XS-XL, and offer ready-to-wear pieces. Their blouses also have three adjustable hooks in the back, allowing for a more customizable experience for their shoppers.
About the MOR Brand:
Mayuri likes to describe her brand as “affordable luxury.” Although there are many luxurious brands who create beautiful designs, she wanted to cater to those who wanted the elegance of South Asian clothing without the high prices.
More than anything, Mayuri wanted to cater to her women living the “do more” lifestyle. Since most of her customers are first-generation US citizens, they are used to doing more in their day-to-day lives, serving as proud examples for their parents who worked hard for their positions in this new country. Taking the opportunity their parents gave them, they typically go above and beyond in their personal lives and career. When thinking about her future shoppers, Mayuri asked herself, “How can I help customers who are busy with their everyday responsibilities?
The answer? Do more for them.
She lives by this idea by creating effortlessly elegant pieces to her collection. With just a quick steam, most of her items are ready to wear. Her on-demand shipping policy also allows any customer to purchase from her collection. Although she mostly ships in the U.S. and has recently opened internationally in Canada, she has shipped to many countries all over the world, including the U.K, Australia, France, and the Netherlands.
After she launched her company in 2021, Mayuri quickly understood how hesitant most shoppers are when it comes to buying from a new online store. She knew that she needed to bring her products to her customers to show them the quality and fit of MOR’s collection. With this new information, she decided to open pop-up stores across the country. Last year, she successfully opened 11 pop-ups. Her collection, along with collaborations with shoe, handbag, and jewelry brands, gave her customers the shopping experience they needed to truly understand MOR.
Future of MOR:
When thinking about the future of MOR, Mayuri focused on two key aspects that she wanted to improve: her customers’ experiences and her product line. Technology is constantly changing and improving. She found herself wondering how she could take advantage of these advancements to create an easier shopping experience for her customers. Mayuri and her team are consistently researching new ways for their shoppers to easily repurpose their older clothing to expand their options and update their wardrobe in one easy step. As for their products, Mayuri wants to continue adding to MOR’s collection, providing a wide variety of perfected styles, from staple pieces of every color of the rainbow to glamorous special event outfits,
MOR provides a solution for anyone who wants a multi-use, affordable clothing item for any South Asian event. If you want comfort and style without breaking your wallet, then make sure to check out their website at MOR Collections. Make sure to also visit their Instagram page: MOR Collections.
